The governor of Sao Paulo announced a two week mandatory quarantine to begin on Tuesday and last until April 7, according to Reuters.

Sao Paulo is the largest state by population in Brazil with 46 million inhabitants, as well as being the nation’s financial and industrial hub.

Governor Joao Doria said that 15 people have died from COVID-19 out of 18 confirmed deaths in the country.

President Jair Bolsonaro called some measures taken to slow the spread of the coronavirus “absurd,” point explicitly to the decision to close churches and malls.
