On Monday, President Sebastian Pinera announced that Chile will close its borders to all foreigners this Wednesday in an effort to stem the outbreak of COVID-19.
“From Wednesday, ALL land, sea and area borders will be closed for the entry of foreigners. Chileans from countries at risk may enter subject to mandatory quarantine. The Armed Forces will collaborate with the protection of our borders,” tweeted President Pinera.
The prohibition will not extend to cargo vessels coming from other countries.
Data from the World Health Organization indicate that the spread of the coronavirus in Chile is accelerating.
The outbreak of COVID-19 raises questions concerning the upcoming vote to on whether to draft a new constitution. According to Reuters, Health Minister Jaime Manalich has not made a decision yet.
