The Department of State Office of the Spokesperson published the following media note regarding a memorandum of cooperation between the United State and Guatemala to decrease illegal immigration.
On May 27, the U.S. Government signed a new Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) with the Government of Guatemala in order to help stem the northward flow of illegal immigrants from Central America to the United States. Through this initiative our two governments will enhance cooperation on border security; training; joint actions to counteract illicit flows of people, drugs, and money; and improvements in the identification, administration, and detention of illegal immigrants.
The United States welcomes this agreement, signed during Acting Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kevin McAleenan’s visit to Guatemala, and the growing willingness that Guatemala has shown to address these issues in a concerted way, which are a result of sustained U.S. diplomacy. Under this MOC, DHS will provide training and capacity building for the Government of Guatemala’s officials to better control its borders and on waypoints along migration and human smuggling routes.
