On Wednesday, Judge Danilo Quevedo approved a US$184 million plea deal between Odebrecht and the Dominican Republic. Judge Quevedo’s ruling overturns another ruling by Judge Alejandro Vargas on March 1, which rejected the plea agreement.

Judge Quevado’s decision comes less than a month after thousands in the Dominican Republic marched against Odebrecht and corruption.

The announcement also comes days after a US judge approved US$2.9 billion in fines related to a plea deal between Odebrecht and the governments of Brazil, the United States, and Switzerland.

The Odebrecht corruption scandal has rocked Latin America and the Caribbean since the scope of the corruption scheme was revealed by the United States Justice Department in December 2016.
